Spiritual Nurture

Maybe it begins with “Jesus loves me, this I know…” or playing the part of a sheep in the Christmas pageant.

Maybe it begins with a mid-life questioning or a desire for a community.

Maybe it begins with grief, or fear about what comes after this life.

We encounter God in different ways, at different ages and stages of life. It’s a journey that includes joy and struggle, times of doubt and challenge, moments of calm and sleepless nights.

At UCCB, we call that whole experience “spiritual nurture”.  It takes place in worship, in Sunday morning gatherings for youth, on mission trips, in book groups and adult discussion groups.  Of course, it also takes place during coffee hour, at the Merrie Christmas Fair, and in the parking lot.

Formally, we currently offer the following programs for Spiritual Nurture:

Sunday mornings

Please note, parents are always welcome to stay with their children in these programs, and children are always welcome to stay in worship.

Up through kindergarten, children are nurtured in our professionally staffed nursery.  The nursery is open every week.

Sunday School

Elementary age youth share stories and activities in the Gathering Room.  This Sunday School program is held most weeks, except for school vacations and holidays.

GIFT (Growing in Faith Together)

Middle school youth discuss important issues and do fun activities.  This GIFT program is held most weeks, except for school vacations and holidays.

Spiritual Nurture Throughout the Year

What do you believe about Jesus, the afterlife, the meaning of life?  These are the sorts of questions we wrestle with in Confirmation.  Eighth graders (and older youth who haven’t previously participated in Confirmation) meet for four workshops to explore their own beliefs.  Participants then share their beliefs in a service of worship.

Youth Mission Trip

Every summer, UCCB youth travel around the country for a week-long mission trip.  We explore the region to which we travel, meet youth from other parts of the country and work with local service organizations.  As a group, we worship, we connect, and we have lots of fun!  Leading up to the mission trip, monthly gatherings help us get to know each other, plan, and raise funds for the trip. Learn more about our Mission Trips.

Adult Mission Trip

Mission trips are not just for teenagers!  We’ve recently begun offering summer mission trips for adults.  There is just as much bonding, service and fun, with maybe a little more sleep! Learn more about our Mission Trips.

Women’s Retreat

Each year a new retreat leader offers a different theme, while women in the church get away for the weekend.  Along with the opportunity to go deeper in a topic, there is worship, fellowship and wonderful snacks.

UCCB also offers bible studies, book groups and other programs for adults throughout the year.

Spiritual Nurture programs are governed by our Safe Conduct policy, which seeks to create a whole, holy and healthy environment for all.  For a copy of this policy, see Rev. Cindy
